This Mother’s Day, we’re honoring the incredible monkey moms at Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary and sharing the story of how Monkers and Zumie became our surrogate monkey moms, offering love where it was needed most.
When we rescued 25 capuchins from a closing facility, the simple rescue quickly became a race to save a fragile infant and care for two young monkeys, Monkers and Zumie. Watch as the rescue team works to safely bring the monkeys into our care.
While our team stepped in with urgent care, something beautiful happened — Monkers stepped in as a surrogate mother, offering the love and comfort every baby deserves. Watch how Monkers cares for this tiny infant and how her role as a surrogate mother began.
As more babies arrived, Monkers and Zumie’s family grew — each with story and in need of comfort and love. In these moments, you can see something powerful, healing and trust finding a way as both monkeys cared for this new arrival, so fragile he could barely lift his tiny head.
Watch as they open their hearts, gently caring for baby Dylan — rescued from a deplorable situation in the pet trade. Many of the monkeys who come to us have endured Broken Bonds, taken from their mothers as babies, far too soon, sold into the pet trade, or used in research. They were denied the most natural bond — the love of their mother.
Many of the monkeys who come to us have endured Broken Bonds, taken from their mothers as babies, far too soon, sold into the pet trade, or used in research. They were denied the most natural bond — the love of their mother. But here, something different is possible. Here, they find safety, healing, and love. Watch and you’ll witness the miracle of birth, a mother in labor, delivering and nursing her baby. Even though this baby was born behind bars — she will never be stolen from her mother’s arms.
